1. PVRIS
PVRIS is an electro-pop-rock band from Lowell, Massachusetts. On June 18, 2014, the band announced that they signed with Rise and Velocity Records.
During summer of 2014, the band played for two weeks at Battle of Bands stage at Warped Tour again. While they were playing, The Huffington Post said that PVRIS was one of “18 Artists You Need to Know Halfway to 2014” claiming that “The first female-fronted band that got to sign Rise Records (…) they may have just made its smartest acquisition yet.”
PVRIS won the Alternative Press Award for Breakthrough Band. They played ‘My House’ with Tyler Carter from ISSUES and an orchestra in the ceremony, that took place in Cleveland, Ohio the 22nd of July.
PVRIS had their first headlining tour in Europe. Due to popular demand, they had to upgrade some venues, because they almost sold out everything the same day of the tickets release.
2. Bryce Vine
A hip-hop artist whose cool, thoughtful, and witty style belies his West Coast address, Bryce Vine is a rapper and singer who broke through in 2014 with his single “Sour Patch Kids.”
Lazy Fair In 2014, Bryce released his debut EP, a six-song set called Lazy Fair (the title was a play on the French phrase “laissez-faire,” which was also the name of a boat owned by his parents). The EP spawned two online hits, “Sour Patch Kids” and “Guilty Pleasure,” which respectively racked up over 11 million and five million plays on streaming services. Bryce poked fun at the clichés of hardcore rap with 2015’s “The Thug Song,” a track built around a Green Day sample that prevented it from receiving a commercial release. Another EP, Night Circus, was released in 2016. A year later, Bryce dropped a single, “Drew Barrymore,” in anticipation of his third EP, Carnival. A second single, “On the Ball,” appeared in 2018.
3. Jamila Woods
Jamila Woods’ cultural lineage–from her love of Lucille Clifton’s poetry to cherished letters from her grandmother to the infectious late 80s post-punk of The Cure–structure the progressive, delicate and minimalist soul of HEAVN, her debut solo album released in the summer of 2016 on Closed Sessions. “It’s like a collage process,” she says. “It’s very enjoyable to me to take something I love and mold it into something new.” A frequent guest vocalist in the hip-hop, jazz and soul world, Jamila has emerged as a once-in-a-generation voice on her soul-stirring debut.
Music–like poetry– is personal. “It became a way to stop hiding, to actually be the most honest with myself through writing,” she says. “It helps me check in with myself.” And that honesty translated to HEAVN, an album she describes as a collection of, “nontraditional love songs pushing the idea of what makes a love song.” You’ll find the bits and pieces of her past and present that make Jamila: family, the city of Chicago, self-care, and the black women she calls friends.
Jamila is an artist of substance creating music crafted with a sturdy foundation of her passions and influences. True and pure in its construction and execution, her music is the best representation of Jamila herself: strong in her roots, confident in her ideas, and attuned to the people, places and things shaping her world.
