After working with hundreds of colleges, I’ve found that one thing has changed dramatically with Gen Z. They don’t want to attend an event. They want to experience something worth talking about. Students aren’t asking, “Who is the entertainer?” They’re asking, “What’s in it for me?” and “Will this be fun enough to interrupt what I was already doing?”
Students want experiences. They want something they can do with friends, personalize, compete in, post on social media, or talk about afterward. Campus programming has an exciting opportunity to create experiences that truly stand out. For student activity programmers, the question is not just, “What should we book?” but “What will make students excited to participate?”
1. Sell the Experience, Not Just the Event
An event name tells students what something is. Your marketing should tell them why they will want to be part of it.
Instead of simply promoting a Silent Disco, Game Show, or Make and Take, highlight the payoff by saying things like:
– Dance with your friends.
– Compete for prizes.
– Make something unique.
– Meet new people.
– Take photos.
Total Trivia becomes a chance to challenge your friends, the Portable Roller Rink becomes a social experience, and Make and Take programs become an opportunity to create something personalized.
2. Bring Programming to the Students
Some of the most engaging campus programming meets students where they already are.
Bring activities to high traffic locations such as the Student Union, dining hall, campus center, residence halls, and main quad. A student might spot a Make and Take program like Photo Coffee Mugs, Photo Journals, or Patch & Press Hats, a Pop Up Game Show, or a DIY activity such as Create-a-Creature or Color Your Own Tote and decide to participate on the spot.
3. Make It Social
Students love experiences they can share with their friends. Team competitions, group games, creative activities, and interactive attractions give students something to do together while creating opportunities for conversation and connection.
Game Shows, Escape Rooms, Silent Disco, Giant Games, and the Portable Roller Rink all put students in the middle of the action and give them an experience to enjoy together.
4. Build in Competition
A little friendly competition can add energy to almost any program.
Live leaderboards, bonus rounds, mini challenges, championship rounds, and prizes give students something to follow and look forward to. Free Money Game Show, Total Trivia and our other game shows do all of these. All of our game shows combine competition, interaction, and prizes to keep students engaged from beginning to end.
5. Make the Line Part of the Experience
Students are willing to wait when they know they are about to experience something unique. In fact, seeing a line can signal that something exciting is happening.
A crowd waiting to create a personalized item or participate in an interactive experience can build curiosity and encourage more students to join. Friends can socialize while they wait, watch others participate, and anticipate their turn.
The goal is not always to eliminate the line. It is to create something students feel is worth waiting for.
6. Create Something Worth Posting
Social media is part of the campus experience. When planning a program, ask, “What will students want to take photos of, record, or share?
Personalized creations, group photos, funny moments, and competitions can all create natural social media content.
Programs such as the Full Color Sign Shop, Photo Night Lights, Create-a-Creature, and Patch & Press Hats give students something they can create, photograph, and share with their friends.
