Mindful Meditation: The Benefits of Yoga for College Students

College students are no stranger to stress. In fact, no one is. Everybody experiences physical and mental stress every day. That’s why it’s important to find healthy ways to relieve stress and anxiety. Yoga does just that.

So, is yoga just another exercise? Recent studies say no, it’s more than the physical exercise we see people do day-to-day. In addition to it’s physical benefits, yoga is proven to strengthen people’s mental health, including enhanced social wellbeing, reducing anxiety and depression, and an increase in quality of life. This is because, yoga increases body awareness, relieves stress, reduces muscle tension, strain, and inflammation, sharpens attention and concentration, and calms and centers the nervous system. (Psychology Today, 2013)

Introducing yoga to college students is beneficial in so many ways. It’s shown that students that participate in Yoga show improved mood, behavior, and mindfulness in their personal and academic lives. (Science Daily, 2012) Full programs that combine yoga postures with breathing exercises and meditation provenly reduce stress and anxiety. This all means adding opportunities for gentle yoga practices during stressful times in a semester like mid-terms or finals week can lead to better-performing students in and out of the classroom.

At Neon Entertainment, Shanice Green has developed a program designed for college students. With Shanice Green’s Take Two Breaths, students are encouraged to take a break, relax, and ‘take two breaths’. The virtual program was developed as a result of COVID-19 and student’s need for clarity and mindfulness during the pandemic while also staying socially distant. TakeTwo Breaths uses Yoga, Music, and Positive Affirmations to enhance their wellbeing both mentally and physically. Shanice’s program is designed for all levels from first-time beginners to advanced yogi’s. Students will leave equipped with self-care tools to help cultivate calm moments every day.

COVID-19 has impacted everyone’s lives in many ways. Contact your Neon Agent for more information on Health and Wellness Programs for your students and community.
