Over the last few years, silent discos have evolved from a relatively niche event to an increasingly popular and entertaining way to spend an evening. While this trend is huge and growing, many of us still have not yet attended a silent disco and are curious to find out what they actually are.
What is a Silent Disco?
A silent disco is a music performance that is silent. All the participants are given wireless headphones that are all connected to the same audio system. The exact technical specs differ depending on the setup. Our Silent Disco Event has 50-5000 wireless headphones with personal volume controllers that are broadcasted to from a transmitter with a range of 500 yards. We have separate music stations transmitted, and LED lights on the headphones show those nearby which station you are listening to.

This technology causes all the headphones to be playing the same music at the same time, but localized around each participant’s ears. Alternatively, some silent discos have everyone listening to their own favorite music and have people jam out to that. So if you were not part of the silent disco, you would just see a crowd of people dancing to no music. Certainly a strange sight if you didn’t understand what was going on!!
When did Silent Discos Begin?
The first silent disco is rather hard to pin down. Many sources claim different things. We do know that the trend of silent discos began sometime in the early 2000s. Music festivals and events took the idea and ran with it from there. Now, about a quarter century late,r silent discos are monoliths of entertainment, being immensely popular with college students, music lovers, and just about everyone!
Why are Silent Disco’s Better then Live Music?
Live music will always have its place. There is no world where silent discos dwarf live music in popularity. Still, silent discos do have some advantages when it comes to live music
They’re Silent
It’s important to state the obvious here, but a silent disco is quiet. Certainly more quiet then live music. There are many reasons why live music cannot work in a situation because it is too loud. Noise rules in residential areas, students in class on campus, and people trying to sleep. All these scenarios prevent live music from being booked, but wouldn’t stop a silent disco.
Your Ears, Your Music
At most silent discos, you don’t have to be listening to the same music that everyone else is. You can have multiple options for the music that you want to listen to. Or in some cases, you can even put on your favorite song and jam to that.
You don’t need a Band
You might have a DJ or an operator managing the disco, but the cost and logistical requirements of setting up a band are immensely higher than bringing a silent disco to your event. Plus bands are generally limited in what kind of music they can play. With silent discos, the possibilities are limitless!
Its Easy to Connect
A problem you may have had at a concert before is trying to talk to a friend or a stranger, but you have to yell over the music to do so. Silent discos fix this. It’s easy for two people to socialize and chat with each other during a silent disco. College students, in particular, have the opportunity to get to know more students around campus during a disco.
What kind of Events have Silent Discos?
Silent discos are often brought to all sorts of events; when there are people, there is a party. In all seriousness, the most common places that you will find silent discos will be at orientation week in colleges, spring fling celebrations, finals weeks, and family weekends at colleges.
Silent discos end up being especially popular with college students, due to the stress relief and social elements that a silent disco contains. Also, I’ve stated this before, but I can’t overstate how much of a trend silent discos are.
How can I start a Silent Disco?
To have a silent disco, the biggest challenge is the technology. You’d need a large number of wireless headphones that are connected to your audio transmitter through radio, wifi, or other wireless methods. The initial starting cost can be immense.
