3 Reasons to Consider an Alcohol Awareness Program for Your High School Students

We’ve been in the business of entertaining and engaging crowds for over 3 decades. With experience working with colleges, schools, and companies, we’ve gained experience and an understanding of what types of events work best for different groups and sizes. Today on the blog we wanted to focus on high school students and an important cause, Alcohol Awareness.

Alcohol awareness is something that can be extremely beneficial for students in high school, as the majority of them will soon be entering college, which can create a lot of scenarios that require positive choices.

Let’s take a few minutes to talk about why administrators and high school event planners should consider an alcohol awareness program for their schools!

It can save lives

Underage drinking can have legal consequences, but can also put kids in danger. Most adolescents think alcohol is something they need to participate in to look cool or fit in, and peer pressure can cause students to make decisions they will regret. Most adolescents consume alcohol in the form of binge drinking, drinking high amounts of alcohol in a short amount of time. This can lead to alcohol poisoning and when combined with driving can have detrimental results.

According to alcoholrehabguide.org, by age 15, roughly 33% of adolescents have had at least one drink. By 18, that number increases to an estimated 60%. When considering car accidents, homicides, alcohol poisoning, and suicide, there are over 4,000 deaths related to alcohol each year. When a student starts drinking before the age of 15, they are four times MORE likely to become alcohol-dependent at some point in their lives.

It can inspire change.

Adolescent drinkers don’t know what they don’t know. Without transparent, informative, and entertaining education on the dangers of alcohol, they could end up submitting themselves to a bevy of issues. A teenage drinker is more likely to experience the following consequences.

  • Problems in school
  • Social issues
  • Health concerns
  • Physical or sexual assault
  • Unwanted or unplanned pregnancy
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • High risk of suicide attempts
  • Legal trouble
  • Abuse of other substances

Having open dialog in an inclusive setting amongst their peers can significantly impact their perception of drinking, and in turn, help them to make better decisions in high school, college, and beyond.

Alcohol Awareness can still be fun!

You remember being a teenager. Every one of us is different, but we can all assume that at some point in our teenage years, we wanted to rebel against whatever adults had to say. Preaching and scaring kids into not drinking isn’t realistic, as there are plenty of movies and TV shows and older friends & relatives on social media that demonstrate partying that appears to be fun and entertaining. Well, who says alcohol awareness can’t be fun and entertaining? The best way to learn something controversial is with your friends and in a fun way.

Here are a few fun ways you can help prepare high school students for a safer future, in college and beyond!
